AstraZeneca honored
AstraZeneca China, a UK-headquartered pharmaceutical producer, was given the "Best employer and environmental protection award" by CCTV, China's largest television station, for fulfilling its social responsibility in China and its efforts in environment protection.
The company's environmental protection program is demonstrated by its sewage treatment and emission control measures in its Wuxi plant, Jiangsu province.
Eyesight aid
The China Charity Federation launched a project at the end of last month for children with amblyopia or dimming vision.
The project will provide free treatment to more than 20,000 children with amblyopia in poverty-stricken areas within five years. Quick Vision, the country's leading ophthalmic device provider, has donated medical equipment worth 32 million yuan to the project. China has 12 to 15 million children with amblyopia, which can be cured with timely treatment.
Young leaders
China Young Leaders Foundation (CYLF), a non-profit charitable organization formed by Ariden Cheng, managing director of Hong Kong-based New World Development Company, recently launched a young leaders training project.
The foundation, which was established in 2007, aims to support and boost the connection between young people on the mainland and in Hong Kong.
Beginning this month, CYLF will go to 25 universities around the mainland to introduce the foundation. In addition, it will launch a high-profile forum to provide a platform for students to communicate with leaders in business and other sectors of society.
Small angels
Home decorating magazine Deckome has signed a contract with the Chinese Foundation and Red Cross to support the foundation's "Small Angel Program", a philanthropic project that offers free medical treatment for poverty-stricken children with leukemia.
The magazine will promote 100 home decoration enterprises to donate money for the program and organize charity galas to raise funds.
China Southern scholarship
China Southern Airlines Co Ltd donated 1 million yuan to Shenyang Institute of Aeronautical Engineering last month to set up a scholarship for students from poor families.
The airline and the institute have been cooperating closely on training, technological research and development.
