Lei Feng (1940-1962) was an ordinary Chinese soldier who was always handy and helpful to others during his entire lifetime of 22 years. In 1963, a "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" campaign was initiated nationwide by Chairman Mao Zedong and since then Lei Feng has become a cultural icon representing earnestness and service. Also in 1963, the squad in which Lei Feng had served was renamed in his honor by the Ministry of Defense. [Photo/chinadaily.com.cn]
