Premier to attend Summer Davos

Premier Li Keqiang will attend the opening ceremony of the 11th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, also known as Summer Davos, from June 26 to 28 in China's northeastern coastal city of Dalian, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang announced on Wednesday. The premier will address the meeting, Geng said, have talks with the leaders of Finland and Sweden, and meet leaders of business, finance, think tanks and the media.

Fugitive returns from US, gives up

Yuan Mei, one of China's most wanted fugitives, returned to the country and turned herself in to the police, the top anti-corruption authority said on Wednesday. Yuan, 46, surrendered on Tuesday. She was a credit clerk at a sub-branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in Sichuan province, and fled to the United States in September 2002 after being accused of embezzling public funds, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Assets of dead ex-official sought

An application to confiscate the illegal gains and other assets involved in a deceased senior official's graft case has been submitted, the Yangzhou Intermediate People's Court said on Wednesday. Ren Runhou, ex-deputy governor of Shanxi province, accepted bribes valued at 1.99 million yuan ($291,500) and embezzled 692,000 yuan, the court said. Ren could not explain the sources of a further 12.1 million yuan found on his property. Ren died of an illness in September 2014 after he was put under investigation for severe violations of Party discipline. A decision will be issued at a later date, the court said.

Toxic gas leak kills 6 in tunnel

A poisonous gas leak killed six workers at a tunnel construction site on Wednesday morning, local authorities confirmed. The incident happened in a tunnel along a pivotal railway line that will link the cities of Lincang and Dali, according to sources from China Railway 10th Bureau Group Co, the project contractor.

Drug trafficking suspect captured

A man was caught smuggling drugs inside his car's spare tire at a highway inspection station, police said on Wednesday. Officers in Mojiang county were conducting routine inspections on Saturday when they found an unusually heavy spare tire in an SUV at 9:40 pm. The driver, identified as Yin, appeared nervous while being questioned. Police then broke open the tire and found 30 bags of methamphetamine weighing a total of 21.25 kilograms. Yin was taken into custody.
