Villager uncovers giant mushroom

A resident of Shitan village, Shexian county, has found a huge Iingzhi mushroom in the Huangshan mountains. The fungus, also known as a reishi mushroom, had a circumference almost equal to a grown man's arm span and part of it resembled a human face, the villager said. Lingzhi mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years and are thought to promote health and longevity.

Drunken vandal kicks car doors

A man in Hefei has been charged with property damage after he allegedly dented eight car doors in one evening. The police were called when one of the car owners heard a kicking sound and chased after the man, who has not been named. He was detained and at first denied the allegations, saying he couldn't recall kicking the car doors because he had drank about one liter of alcohol. He later confessed, however, after officers matched the footprints on the doors with the shoes he was wearing at the time.

Bag shipment makes family woozy

A man in Jiangbei district has received more than 180,000 yuan ($26,000) compensation after he and four of his family members claimed a shipment of products bought online made them sick. The man, surnamed Zhou, said he, his wife, his daughter and his parents all either felt nauseous or vomited once they opened 11 bags, made from Oxford fabric, which had been bought from an e-commerce site. The distributor and bag producer both agreed to compensate the family, despite no laboratory tests having been carried out on the mystery plastic.

Worker gives something back

A 54-year-old sanitation worker in Yinzhou district, Ningbo, has donated 20,000 yuan ($2,900) of his life's savings to charity. Yang Dong'en, who lives a simple life, said he was inspired to donate the money by a teacher he had in grade one at primary school. About 45 years ago, the teacher gave him 2 yuan and 5 cents to pay his tuition fees after he lost the money. This is not Yang's first act of generosity, either - two years ago, he also donated 20,000 yuan to a charity in the city's Jiangdong district.

Stabbing victim has lucky escape

A photograph showing a man with a knife sticking out of his left eye socket waiting patiently outside a hospital clinic has gone viral on Chinese social media. The man, in his 30s, was pictured waiting for a doctor on Sunday and was quoted as saying he had been stabbed by his wife in an altercation. Fortunately, the knife did not damage his eyeball or reach his brain. The doctor said he had never seen anything like it in the 15 years he had been practicing medicine.

Doctors remove brain parasite

A man in Zhongfang county, Huaihua, has had a parasite removed from his brain that doctors believe may have been there for seven years. The 51-year-old is thought to have contracted the parasitic infection known as sparganosis when he ate fresh snake gallbladder as a cure for a stomach illness. In the years since, he had experienced partial paralysis of the face, pain in his head and behind his eyes, but did not got to hospital until January after he collapsed.

Baker fakes own abduction

A woman in Lanzhou was detained for 10 days after she faked her own kidnapping. Police were alerted by the woman's mother, who had received a message from her daughter's phone saying that she had been abducted and demanding a ransom of 60,000 yuan ($8,700). Officers soon tracked the daughter down to a rented apartment nearby. She admitted to faking the whole thing, adding that she wanted the money to pay for cake-baking lessons.

Mystery deposit sparks search

A woman in Xi'an has reached out to local media to find the person who deposited 70,000 yuan ($10,100) in her bank account. The woman, surnamed Zhao, said she thought it must fraud when she received a text message informing her about the deposit. When she confirmed that the money was actually in her account several days later, the bank would not tell her who had deposited it or where it had come from. Zhao said she hoped the media could help find whose money it was, as she did not want to take something that did not belong to her.

A child in Suzhou brought a piece of meat to school after misunderstanding his kindergarten teacher's instructions. The teacher, surnamed Li, said she had asked all the children to bring a type of potted plant known as rou rou in Chinese so that they could watch the plants grow once spring had arrived. But the child in question, nicknamed Lin Lin, misunderstood, as rou also means meat in Chinese.
