(Xinhua) Updated: 2015-09-29 09:13

BEIJING - China issued a red alert for the approaching super typhoon Dujuan, which will bring storms and rough seas to southeastern regions in the next few days.

Heavy rain and gales whipped up by the 21st typhoon this year are set to batter parts of Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Taiwan, according to the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center on Monday.

Colossal waves of up to 13 meters were observed off the eastern coast of Taiwan, while waves of up to 6 meters are expected along the mainland coast.

The center told ships to return to harbor and residents to stay indoors. It was also advised that dams be reinforced.

Maritime departments were asked by local authorities to prepare for Dujuan.

Local governments vowed to ensure activity on the water is adequately supervised and promised to relocate people from areas in Dujuan's path.
