Chery Automobile-controlled Karry Auto launched its first compact multi-purpose vehicle, the K50, on Jan 27 in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province.

According to the carmaker, the model's 170 mm ground clearance is the highest in its segment, with an approaching angle of 23 degrees and departure angle of 22 degrees.

The K50 has a front-wheel drive chassis, which compared to rear-wheel drive MPV's, results in less power loss, lower fuel consumption and a quieter in-car environment, according to the carmaker. A front-wheel drive car is also safer on ice and snow and turns better, according to the company.

Chery shared its R&D facilities and techniques with Karry, and a 1.5-liter Chery ACTECO engine powers the new K50. So the automaker said the new model is built to sedan quality with SUV design.

The compact MPV using five-speed manual transmission consumes 6.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers, while the automatic transmission model consumes 7.5 liters.

The K50 runs on 15-inch tires and is equipped with four-direction adjustable front seats and a follow-me-home headlights. The top versions feature a 7-inch screen infotainment and navigation system, button start, multi-function steering wheel, multi-function rear view mirror, cruise control and electric controlled windows.

The suggested retail prices start from 46,800 yuan ($7,672). Customers can select seven-seat, five-seat or van versions to fit specific demands.
