NEW YORK - A United Airlines passenger plane made an emergency landing at Newark Airport in New York on Sunday morning after reported smoke in the cabin and cockpit.

The flight crew of the Seattle-bound Flight 409 noticed an unusual smell in the cockpit before the plane returned to the airport, according to the company and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

No one was believed to be injured in the mishap, which was the second emergency landing in the last two days at Newark Airport.

The Berlin-bound United Airlines Flight 96 had an emergency landing on Saturday night. The FAA said the plane blew a tire on takeoff, possibly sending debris into the engine.

As a precaution, fuel was burned off west of Newark before the plane landed. None of the 173 passengers and crew members on board was hurt.

In a statement, the airline said the Boeing 757 "experienced a mechanical issue with an engine."
