On July 4, the first Sunday of the month, staff from China Daily, accompanied by their family members, paid a visit to Sun Village located in Beijing's Shunyi District.

Sun Village is a non-governmental organization dedicated to nurturing and providing education for underprivileged children whose parents are in prison.

The collection of donations started on Thursday. The response to this call for charity was absolutely positive. As a result, we were able to bring many things on the visit, including bags of clothes, boxes of books, toys and various daily necessities.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome. Zhang Shuqin, the founder of this organization, who was also widely known as Granny Zhang, gave a touching and inspirational speech about the past and present of Sun Village. The stories about those underprivileged children as well as the difficulties this organization has been through deeply touched our hearts.

Granny Zhang mentioned that one of the most severe challenges they face is the instability of their funding. In order to ensure a more secure environment and a sustainable development for the organization, Sun Village has been trying to stand on its own feet and developed several self-supporting businesses. The village already has the date and peach industries, a used-material center for trading donated secondhand commodities for money, and a tour service focusing on the countryside.

Gao Anming, a representative of China Daily, said that charity is not the only reason we were there. We also hoped to befriend these kids. He also expressed our respect for the organization as well as our determination to offer continuing contributions.

In order to expand this sheltering umbrella to guide the children to live a life of dignity, Sun Village definitely needs more helping hands.

Food, clothing and funds are vital foundations for children at Sun Village. But more importantly, they need your attention, your support and your love.

It's your turn to get involved and make a difference.
