50 ambassadors to share Earth Day stories

As the 43rd Earth Day approaches, ambassadors from 50 countries to China are going to share their environment stories on Beijing Radio's special program Connecting the Earth, Beijing Daily reported Wednesday.

Beijing Radio's special focuses on topics such as cherishing the earth, protecting the homeland and treasuring resources. Environmentalists and volunteers will also share their experiences in environmental activities.

Beijing is to take action to make its coal-fired power plants and heating facilities go green amid public concern over the city's poor air quality, said a government official.

Zhang Gong, director of Beijing municipal development and reform commission, said that an estimated 80 billion yuan ($13 billion) will be invested to switch the city's coal-fired power plants and heating facilities to natural gas.

China's environmental watchdog will continue to crack down on heavy-metal pollution amid a renewed wave of lead poisoning cases in recent months, according to Wu Xiaoqing, deputy minister of environmental protection.

"Together with eight other ministries, we will scrutinize several heavy-metal industries this year, mainly targeting illegal operations in acid lead-battery manufacturing, heavy-metal smelting and processing," Wu told China Daily.
