Juancun is a community in Taiwan, built between 1949 and the 1960s, to serve as provisional housing for the soldiers and their dependents from the mainland after Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan. But the village ended up becoming a permanent settlement and forming a distinct culture.
The American-born Taiwan playwright and theater director Stan Lai is going to take the audience in Guangzhou on a journey into Juancun culture by staging his play The Village on Oct 26 and 27.
The story, spanning a timeframe of 60 years, tells of homesick old villagers who are eager to return to their hometown in the mainland while new villagers recognized Juancun as their home. The 210-minute-long play portrays the lives of three families, as they share their joys and tears with the audiences.
8 pm, Oct 26 and 27. Century Hall, Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center, 1039-1045, Baiyun Avenue South, Guangzhou. 020-8880-0888.
