National Art Museum of China is holding a centenary retrospective of artist and educator Sun Zongwei (1912-1979). The exhibition presents more than 100 oil paintings, ink art, watercolor, charcoal drawing, and sketches, along with books, documents and photos, to illustrate Sun's artistic career spanning from early 1930 till late 1960s.

"Sun is remembered as a pioneer who devoted his time to portraying ethnic groups in western parts of China during the first half of the 20th century," says curator Wu Hongliang.

He also worked as a key assistant to master painter Zhang Daqian in the early 1940s when Zhang surveyed, copied and studied ancient murals at Mogao Grottoes, in Dunhuang, Gansu province.
