Lay of the land

( China Daily)

Chinese landscape painting is said to have become its own genre during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). It has evolved from representations of the external world to include contemporary depictions of traditional scenery.

The Hanging Garden focuses on artists employing traditional formats and mediums to communicate through contemporary landscape art. The works of Yu Peng, Xiang Guohua and Tony Ng illustrate three distinct directions within the boundaries of contemporary Chinese painting and sculpture. It's less about the literal representation of scenery and more about establishing a new vocabulary through longstanding techniques, materials and motifs.

Until June 30. Art+ Shanghai Gallery, House 2, 22 Fumin Lu, Shanghai. 021-6248-4388.
