The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has released a new policy for mainland-Taiwan film co-productions and the importation of films from Taiwan to mainland theaters.

The mainland and Taiwan signed the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in 2010, stating that films from Taiwan are exempted from the film imports quota.

However, the agreement did not specify how a Taiwan film is categorized.

The policy, which was released on Dec 3, defines Taiwan films as Chinese-language films with at least half of its crew coming from Taiwan, and at least half of their copyrights belonging to studios from Taiwan.

The policy also defines mainland-Taiwan co-productions. The story and main characters must have something to do with the mainland and Taiwan, and at least one-third of the cast must be from the mainland. Those films enjoy the same rights as mainland films.
