The retail sector is reaping more profits as consumers are increasingly willing to splurge on electronics and jewelry under current robust stock market conditions. Retail sales jumped 13 percent to HK$19.6 billion in September over the same time last year, according to the Hong Kong Census and Statistic Department.
The nation is set for a bumper grain harvest this year. Sun Zhengcai, the agriculture minister, expects the total yield to hit 500 million tons. The last milestone was in 1984, when the grain harvest surpassed 400 million tons. It reached 300 million tons in 1978.
