One year after leaving prison, Zhang Hui and his uncle Zhang Gaoping, who were acquitted in March 2013 of raping and murdering a girl, have each bought a BMW sedan and are trying to lead a normal life.

Zhang Hui said he sometimes has nightmares and loves to eat meat, which was seldom served in prison, where they spent 10 years. He bought an iPhone and has learned to use Wechat (a popular mobile app) to talk with his girlfriend. His uncle, who bought a 130-square-meter apartment, is going on blind dates in an attempt to find a wife.

The two men, both residents of Anhui province, were sentenced to death and life in prison in 2004 after being found guilty of raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl.

During a second trial, the sentences were commuted to a death sentence with a two-year reprieve for Zhang Hui and a 15-year prison term for Zhang Gaoping, before the convictions were overturned last year.
