A former prisoner in Henan province has asked for compensation of 1.47 million yuan ($242,000) after he was wrongly detained for more than 10 years, Legal Evening News reported on Monday.

Li Huailiang, a villager in the province, was granted compensation of 980,000 yuan by Pingdingshan Intermediate People's Court on Wednesday, but he and his family said that is lower than they expected, the report said.

Wang Yongjie, Li's lawyer, told the paper the amount includes 200,000 yuan of mental compensation, which was too small to accept, which is why his client applied to the court for a review of the compensation verdict.

Li, 48, was convicted of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl in 2001, according to the report.

Li stood trial seven times and received three different judgments — of 15 years in prison, the death penalty and death with a reprieve — during his 12-year detention, the report said.

All three sentences were overturned for lack of evidence, the report said, adding Li was released on April 25.
