Mainland slams 'Taiwan independence' stance

BEIJING - A Chinese mainland statement issued on Friday said that there is "no way out" for the "Taiwan independence" stance espoused by the island's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

The statement from the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office was issued in response to a recent DPP report reviewing its mainland-related policies.

"The DPP has long advertised that it will prove its capability to handle cross-Strait relations and seek a basis to initiate communication with the mainland. However, the recent report runs counter to the claims," it said.

The report revealed that the DPP still insists on "one country on each side" and "Taiwan independence" and disregards calls from Taiwan society on developing cross-Strait ties, the mainland statement said.

It claimed, "The DPP is using security concern as a disguise to hinder normal exchanges between the two sides of the Strait and take this 'core value' as an instrument to instigate hostility and confrontation."

DPP leaders' behavior goes against the trend of peaceful development of cross-Strait ties and has violated mainstream public opinion in Taiwan and the fundamental interests of people on both sides, the statement went on.

"There will be no way out for such unrepentant minds," it added.
