CHICAGO - Ford Motor Co is recalling about 6,500 new vehicles in North America to replace a rear door lock that may have a faulty child safety mechanism.

The related models are some 2013 Ford Focus, C-Max and Escape vehicles in the United States and Canada because the child lock on the left rear door may have been installed incorrectly, the Detroit News reported Tuesday.

"The child lock may not engage when the operator uses normal turning force to activate the child lock, and the operator may incorrectly believe the child lock is engaged," Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

No crashes or injuries connected to the recall has been found, Ford said.

The recall covers 5,675 vehicles in the United States as well as 859 in Canada.

The vehicles were built at Ford's Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne and Louisville Assembly from Nov 16-21.

During the review, Ford found that a supplier had sent a mixed stock of parts, which led to the faulty latches.
