Is a gold medal all that matters?

People with low self-esteem or people who are very insecure about their identity require constant reassurance that they are important, hence the emphasis on winning and being seen to win. A confident person does not require the validation of a 'gold medal' to feel good about themselves. A country's emphasis on winning internationally can be equated with insecurity and the need to distract people from other things.
