Work on Inner Mongolia’s first tunnel for high-speed passenger trains was completed on June 28, paving the way for the laying of the line that will connect the region’s city of Hohhot with Zhangjiakou, in Hebei province.

Hohhot is in the Northwestern continental climate, with no severe coldness in winter, nor scorching hotness in summer. The average temperature all the year is around 6 centigrade, and the annual rainfall about 350-500 milimeters.

Hohhot is linked to the national railway networks by Beijing-Baotou and Beijing-Lanzhou lines. There are passenger trains directly to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Yinchuan, lanzhou, Nanjing, and Ningbo, and international through trains to Ulan Bator and Moscow.
