31 killed in bus mishap in northeast India

KOLKATA, India - Thirty-one people were killed and several others seriously injured when a bus fell down from a hill in India's northeast state of Meghalaya Wednesday morning, police said.

The passenger loaded bus was going from another northeast state of Assam to Tripura The bus fell into a 100m deep gorge down the hill about 150km from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya.

The bus had left Guwahati, Assam's capital, and was bound for Agartala, the capital of Tripura.

The majority of those killed died on the spot and the injured were rushed to nearby Silchar Medical College and Hospital in southern Assam.

The driver of the bus, who had lost control of the vehicle on the slippery hill road because of rain, also died.
