UN extends mandate of mission in Iraq

UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) for another year and call for all communities in Iraq to participate in political process.

The resolution extended the mandate of the UNAMI, which expires on Saturday, to July 31, 2013.

The Security Council voiced its support to the people and the government of Iraq in their efforts to build "a secure, stable, federal, united and democratic nations," based on the rule of law and respect for human rights.

The resolution pointed out that challenges to security in Iraq still exist and need to be improved through meaningful political dialogue and national unity. It called on all communities in Iraq to participate in the political process and an inclusive political dialogue.

The Security Council also stressed that all parties in Iraq should continue to take all "feasible" steps and to develop modalities to ensure the protection of affected civilians, and create favorable conditions for safe, dignified and sustainable return of refugees.

The Council asked the government of Iraq to continue to provide security and logistical support to the UN presence in the country.
