MOSCOW - NATO would not intervene in Syria, and welcomes UN-Arab League Joint Envoy Kofi Annan's mission to that country, NATO Secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday.

"As for Syria, may I stress that NATO absolutely has no intentions of military interference," Rasmussen said during a video linkup with Russian reporters.

Meanwhile, he urged the Syrian government "to meet the legitimate demands of the Syrian people to introduce freedom and democracy" to the country.

Rasmussen expressed regret that the UN Security Council had failed to reach a binding resolution on Syria, but said he highly appreciated the fact that all Security Council members, including Russia, had supported Annan's mission to Syria.

Moscow has voiced its support to Annan's work and reiterated that a political solution, without any foreign intervention, is the best option for the Syrian crisis.
