TEHRAN - Iran's navy commander, Habibollah Sayyari, said on Saturday that Iran's warships passed through the Suez Canal and headed to the Mediterranean Sea, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Admiral Sayyari said that "The strategic navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran passed through the Suez Canal for the second time since the victory of Islamic Revolution (in 1979)," said the report.

By this voyage, the Iranian navy hopes to convey the message of "peace and friendship" to the regional countries as well as to " show the might of the Islamic Republic of Iran," he was quoted as saying.

In February 2011, two Iranian warships, the supply ship Kharg and the patrol frigate Alvand, sailed through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea to visit some Syrian ports.

Israeli President Shimon Peres, then, said the passage of the two Iranian warships through the Suez Canal was a "political provocation", while Iran said it was a routine visit.
