JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck off West Papua in eastern parts of Indonesia on Friday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported here.
The USGS reported that the quake was at 5.6 magnitude with a depth oft 16.3 km under sea bed.
The quake jolted at 12:34 pm Jakarta time (0534 GMT) with the epicenter at 20 km northwest Tambrau of West Papua and with a depth at 10 km under sea bed, the agency said.
Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquakes as it sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so called "the Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that frequently cause seismic and volcanic movement in the country home to 129 active volcanoes.
