On June 27, 2014 local time, the Belgian overseas session of the China Hi-Tech Fair was held in Brussels, which is home to the EU’s headquarters. Belgium is a small country with state-of-the-art science and technology. It is the second time for the China Hi-Tech Fair to be held in Belgium.

During the Fair, Chinese representatives of more than 50 organizations from such fields as biotechnology, energy conservation, environmental protection and venture capital investment are going to have 110 B2B meetings with representatives of nearly 100 Belgian businesses.

Liao Liqiang, China’s ambassador to Belgium; Bernard Dewit, chairman of the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC); Chen Biao, vice chairman of the China Hi-Tech Fair Organizing Committee and deputy mayor of Shenzhen; and Bénédicte Wilders, director of Brussels Invest & Export were present and gave speeches at the opening ceremony.

Liao Liqiang pointed out that the China Hi-Tech Fair is the largest and most influential science-tech fair in China and the administrative division of Brussels is an old friend of the Fair which it has been attending since the second China Hi-Tech Fair. Moreover, he once recommended the China Hi-Tech Fair to some Belgian companies, some of which have already established partnerships with Chinese businesses.

In his speech, Chen Biao thanked the Belgian government for giving its full support for the overseas session of the China Hi-Tech Fair. He also pointed out that Belgium has advanced practical technologies and is one of the earliest countries in the world to invest in China’s industries. He hoped that businesses from the two countries could find a satisfactory means of cooperation and ideal partners through the platform of the China Hi-Tech Fair.

With tremendous strengths in science and technology, Belgium boasts state-of-the-art technologies in such fields as microelectronics, biopharmaceuticals, energy conservation and environmental protection, as well as modern agriculture. There is more and more cooperation between China and Belgium in science and technology. Nowadays, the Shenzhen-based Huawei and ZTE are major suppliers of telecommunications operators in Belgium. The research findings of the study on the genome of gut microbiota in the human body led by Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) in China and the Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB) in Belgium have been published in Nature.

During the overseas session, the organizing committee of “Star Entrepreneurs” signed a memo of cooperation with the Association of Chinese Professionals in Belgium (ACPB). The two parties are going to create a platform for start-ups, which will serve as a bridge for overseas Chinese skilled personnel to return to China and for China and Belgium to engage in high-end cooperation and exchanges of personnel.
