学匪 (xuéfěi): Academic bandit

(China Daily) Updated: 2015-04-30 07:44

Special discipline inspection groups from Shanxi provincial Party committee in North China have recently pointed out that there have been violations in the selection of officials in Changzhi Medical College and the political ecology there has serious problems. Some college leaders are academic bandits rather than scholars.

The existence of academic bandits not only reflects the degeneration of those in leading positions, it also has something to do with the bad influence of the social environment. The current college management system means that, to some extent, colleges are appendents to the authorities, and administrative power plays a leading role in their daily operations. Such a bureaucratic system goes against the nature of academic institutions, which not only impedes the vitality of colleges in academic innovation, but also provides soil that breeds the academic bandits.

The existence of academic bandits exposes loopholes in the supervision of academic institutions. Some leaders of academic institutions arbitrarily abuse their administrative power for private interests, while forgetting their role and responsibility as scholars. What these academic bandits do is actually corruption, as they trade their administrative power at colleges for money.

It's high time that administrative environment in academic institutions was cleaned up. A modern college system should be established to get rid of bureaucratic obstacles.
