Editor's note: The discovery of a 7.85-kilogram gold nugget by a herdsman in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has sparked an online row over its ownership. Does the find belong to the country or the person who has discovered it? You're welcome to share your opinions.

If you find treasure you are legally obliged to report it to your local police station within 14 days and failure to do so can get you a £5,000 fine and three months in jail. The police will pass it on to the coroner who will decide whether it is defined as treasure. If a museum wants to acquire your treasure, you will probably be given the market value price. If no museum wants it, you may be entitled to keep it.
