Do reality TV shows do more good than harm?

Reality TV shows often distort reality to suit the program makers. They are carefully cast to get a mix of “characters” who are not at all typical. Mostly they show young, good-looking, self-promoting people who will do anything to get on TV. Usually the program makers place the participants in unnatural situations and give them strange challenges to catch viewers’ eyes.
