My experience comes from me being courteous and friendly to the people I meet, whether through business, socially, in shops or on the street. A smile and a friendly word can go a long way in life when dealing with others and I think foreigners are more open to others. I have many Chinese friends who don't even know their next door neighbor even though they have lived side by side for many years.

When I am shopping or dining, I always make a point of trying my best to use my rather sketchy Chinese ability. I think this, along with a smile, can put others at ease.
