Stability is the foundation for development

Updated: 2013-07-05 21:37

Whether a country can maintain stable development depends on many factors, said an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

Egypt's turmoil seems endless and unpredictable. People are furious because they feel cheated.

Some Western pundits used to proclaim "democracy" can make Egypt a better place to live in and were excited when former leader Mubarak was ousted.

Against the backdrop of economic globalization, the conflict between social development and traditions becomes more intense. A challenge for some Arabian countries is to keep a balance between opening-up and conservatism. The problem is can Islamic countries modernize along Western ideals?

The most urgent task for Egypt is not to have a new president but to boost economic recovery and ensure social consensus.

Without a united and stable nation, no development can be realized anywhere.
