Senior CPC official calls on members to follow 'basic norms'

Xinhua | Updated: 2016-11-14 16:41
BEIJING - Party members must work hard to ensure they continue to progress and are models of integrity, senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Zhao Leji said in an article published by the People's Daily Monday.

Zhao, head of the CPC Central Committee's organization department and a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, stressed how important it was that the "spirit" of the sixth plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee was upheld.

One result of last month's session was the issuance of the norms of contemporary intra-Party political life, which underscored the strict governance of the Party, the article said.

The norms follow the basic principles of Marxism but also draw on the CPC's political life since its establishment in 1921, and the influence of traditional Chinese culture, it said.

Citing the norms, the article said "the consolidation of ideals and beliefs is the prime mission for intra-Party political life," and "all Party members must regard their faith in Marxism and belief in socialism and Communism" as the motivations that drive them forward.

The article called on all CPC members to take economic construction as the central task, put the needs of the people first, and promote the "Four Comprehensives" strategy.

A communique, released after the session, called on all members to "closely unite around the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core."

The call reflects the common will of the CPC as well as the common wish of the Party, the military and the people of all ethnic groups, it said, adding that everyone should protect and uphold the authority of the CPC Central Committee and its central, unified leadership.

To successfully implement the norms, CPC members must follow the Party's code of conduct and address behavior that goes against the Party line, it said.

The CPC has 88 million members and more than 4.4 million local committees, according to the article.

Citing problems that have emerged in intra-Party political life, it said more should be done to solve toxic issues and more effort channelled to strictly governing the Party.

Officials, especially senior officials, should be exemplary role models and lead the way by conforming to CPC norms and accepting criticism, so that they inspire all members to unite around the CPC Central Committee with Xi as the core, it added.
