The National Health and Family Planning Commission will soon launch software on its website that will enable the public to look up information about food additives.

Su Zhi, a food safety official from the commission, said during a news conference on Wednesday that people will be able to key in names of food additives to find which foods the additive is used for, the function of the additive, and safety use limit.

He said food safety standards for items such as edible vegetable oil, honey, and bottled water are scheduled to be introduced soon. In 2013, the commission vowed to make 5,000 food-related standards more efficient by consolidating them into roughly 1,000 by the end of 2015.
