A macaw in a zoo in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, has pulled out all of its feathers after being neglected by visitors, Yangtze Evening News reported on Tuesday.

The macaw, which is about 8 years old, likes visitors and flies to them when they approach its cage. However, it started to pull out its feathers last year when it felt neglected by visitors, zookeepers were quoted as saying in the report.

Ornithologists with the zoo said the macaw is depressed and pulling its feathers out is a way for it to attract attention.

The bird is now receiving treatment at a veterinary hospital.

Considered highly intelligent, macaws can live up to 70 to 80 years. They are large parrots with bright and colorful plumage.
