More offenders sentenced in baby trafficking case

A medical worker involved in a baby trafficking case was sentenced to one year imprisonment for dereliction of duty on Friday in Weinan, Shaanxi province.

Si Xin, former interim head of the Fuping County Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital delivery room, was found guilty of dereliction of duty for failing to follow regulations and was easily convinced by her leader Zhang Shuxia, the main offender, allowing Zhang to carry out her trafficking "business".

Gao Wenping, the former director of obstetrics at the hospital, was also sentenced to one year in jail, with probation of two years. Yao Junmin, former deputy director of the hospital, was sentenced to six months in prison with probation of one year. Wang Li, former director of the hospital, did not receive criminal punishment.

Si said she would appeal her sentence.

The four were charged in connection with the case of Zhang Shuxia, former deputy director of obstetrics at the hospital, who sold seven babies from 2011 to 2013 and caused the death of one baby during the trafficking. Zhang was sentenced to death with probation of two years on Dec 30, 2013.
