All 616 old elevators in Shanghai's residential buildings showed problems in the safety evaluation test by local quality supervision department, the Oriental Morning Post reported on Tuesday.

The elevators are in old communities in the city's Xuhui, Changning, Putuo, Yangpu, Zhabei districts and the Pudong New Area.

The Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision is drafting an elevator safety standard expected to come out the first half of this year, said the report.

The bureau is also trying to make a rule that an elevator's latest maintenance information should be put inside the lift compartment, according to the report.

Shanghai has about 160,000 elevators, the most of all Chinese cities, including 118,000 passenger elevators, 20,000 elevators for cargo and 14,000 escalators.

More than 14,000 elevators have been in service for more than 15 years while some 2,500 have been used for more than 20 years, according to the report.
