Why do Chinese choose 'weird' English names?

I think people picking names in a foreign language should really know something about that language. I have a 3-year-old nephew, who has an English name of "Jackal". It might sound catchy, but I don't think his parents wanted to name their son after a derivative of hyena. When I pointed that out, like any good uncle would do, they ended up accusing of calling their son a dog!
