The 1960s was also the era when Chanel dressed the stars, including Jeanne Moreau and Anouck Aimee-who were close friends of Chanel-in the movies by Italian maestro directors Fellini or Antonioni.

Speaking to China Daily before the Beijing show on May 31, Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel Fashion, says: "Lagerfeld is one of the geniuses of today. He is a master not only in fashion design but many others. He can give you a lot of ideas and he's pushing everyone's limits.

"I have enjoyed working with him for more than 20 years. He is like a sponge, absorbing everything and giving back through his design."

Typically, the Metiers d'Art collection is in Chanel's boutiques around May each year.
