This made the issue of safe participation in outdoor activities a priority for the CMA, as an increasing number of outdoor accidents were reported each year. In 2016, 64 people were killed in outdoor activities, an increase of 45.4 percent compared to 2015.

Wang Yunlong, the acting head of CMA's training department, said the move to initiate the national Outdoor Safety Educational Program is to raise safety awareness.

"Since the program was carried out in 2013, we have developed an amount of safety educational materials and manuals in digital, audio and paper forms," he said. "But one of the problems we faced is how to get these safety tips to reach the outdoor enthusiasts and enable more people to see them."

The touring seminars have became one of the most effective ways to solve the problem, as most attendees are guides, leaders and club founders who can then spread their advanced professional knowledge to the public, according to Wang.

From 2013 to 2016, 56 seminars have been held in 26 provinces and municipalities in China. More than a dozen are scheduled this year.

Apart from touring seminars, the CMA also organized safety training courses for outdoor recreation practitioners. These courses, based on industry standards, provide comprehensive information focused on the roles and responsibilities of outdoor leaders.
