Nanjing Children's Welfare Institution in Jiangsu province has received more than 130 abandoned children in three months after it opened a "safe haven" in December, triple the number it received in the same period a year earlier.

Normally the institution receives about 150 children every year, Nanjing Daily reported.

To take better care of abandoned children, the institution, which now has nearly 800 children, will have to transfer about 150 children to other child welfare institutions in the province.

After the first "safe haven" was established in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, China now has 25 such havens in operation. Another 18 "safe havens" or rescue centers for abandoned babies will be established across the country.
