On July 8, Yanhe magazine debuted a groundbreaking crossover project: a short drama titled Learning a Craft at Beijing Anmo College. Released across multiple social media platforms, the preview of the script and video episodes instantly sparked enthusiastic discussions online, showcasing how the emerging concept of "new mass literature and art" is evolving into a practical force that actively engages with and reshapes social perceptions.

Adopting a realistic, documentary-style lens, the short drama follows the transformation of Yin Sisi, a 21-year-old heiress to a major family-owned daily chemical enterprise in Guangzhou. To outsiders, her path was predetermined: study abroad, then inherit the family empire. Instead, she chose a completely different trajectory, arriving at Beijing Anmo College to spend her days memorizing acupoints and perfecting massage techniques.

Initially keeping her enrollment a secret from her skeptical family, Yin Sisi quickly realized that the craft ran far deeper than the superficial application of oils. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it demanded mastery of pulse diagnosis and precision oil-blending tailored to individual body constitutions. Her dedication ultimately won her family over when she returned home with custom aromatherapy regimens that visibly improved her parents' health.

This realistic approach marks a deliberate departure from the current landscape of digital short dramas. Yan An, president and executive editor-in-chief of Yanhe magazine, noted that while the online short drama market has exploded in scale, it has suffered from severe content homogenization, oversaturated with far-fetched billionaire tropes and fantasy plots.

In contrast, Learning a Craft at Beijing Anmo College addresses contemporary anxieties around career choices in the age of AI. By focusing on a young woman’s journey to becoming an artisan, the production adheres strictly to a realistic ethos—letting events unfold naturally, recording the process faithfully, and presenting the outcomes honestly.

According to creator Li Qing, the project exemplifies a profound shift in cultural production. Traditional literature and art have historically followed an elite-driven model, in which the masses merely consume. This new mass cultural art form, however, champions a decentralized model in which ordinary people create, communicate, and consume their own narratives. By validating diverse paths to success, the drama aims to dissolve social bias and ensure that everyday efforts are respected.

As Yan An concluded, when art moves beyond mere text to actively guide and transform human hearts, it fulfills its ultimate purpose, empowering every individual to live poetically and purposefully.
