"If I refused their bribe, my reputation among the circle of officials would suffer … It was a better choice for me to take the bribe and make friends with them."
Zhang Er'jiang, the former Party chief of Tianmen, Hubei province, said in a recent interview, Zhang was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2002 for taking bribes of over 700,000 yuan ($112,743) and embezzling over 100,000 yuan. He was released in 2010.
