Updated: 2019-07-19

The Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant in Trinidad and Tobago, which was built by POWERCHINA, was officially put into operation on July 12.

After its operation, it will reduce the pollutants discharged into rivers, as well as improve the water quality of rivers and groundwater, effectively solving the problem of insufficient wastewater treatment capacity in the country.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago said that the project's commissioning and operation has played a very positive role in impoving the country's ecological environment. They expressed great appreciation that POWERCHINA completed the project on schedule and controlled the project cost within the budget.

It is expected that China and Trinidad and Tobago will have deeper and further cooperation opportunities to continuously enhance the relations between the two countries, the government added.

Located at the Malabar catchment area, the Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant covers an area of 27 square kilometers, including the plant area, three lift pumping stations, and about 10 kilometers of pipelines. It is capable of handling domestic wastewater of about 110,000 households.

The project optimizes its design and introduces the A/O process, as well as uses environmental protection and energy-saving equipment, solving the problem of sludge treatment at the initial stage of commissioning.

The end-treated sewage can be reused as a water source, which reduces the dependence on external water sources during the whole sewage treatment process.

With the continuous operation of the plant, it can also produce a large amount of crop fertilizer, which has strong environmental and economic benefits.
