China's biggest wind power EPC project successfully transfers

Updated: 2016-05-24

On May 24, local time, China's biggest international EPC wind power project undertaken by POWERCHINA, the Adama II wind power project, successfully attained the transfer certificate. This project was thus smoothly transferred to its owner, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation.

The Adama II wind power project contains 102 wind power sets with a capacity that reaches 1.5 megawatts each for a total installed capacity of 153 megawatts. Thus, this project will meet more than 20 percent of Ethiopia's capital's power demand. It is not only the biggest international EPC wind power project carried out by China that applies Chinese technologies and standards, but also the second largest wind power project on the African continent. This project won strong support from the Ethiopian government and local residents. In May 2015, the Ethiopian president personally launched the power generation and spoke highly of the role played by this project in easing the power supply of the country.

At the China-Africa Cooperation Forum held in South Africa in December 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the model of the Adama II wind power project with African state leaders. Standing in front of the sand table, Xi pointed at the model and said to South African President Zuma, as well as the other African political leaders present, “This is a wind power project contracted by our Chinese companies in Ethiopia, and it will bring clean energy to Africa.”

The implementation of "going global" of Chinese standards and Chinese technologies brought the latest technologies of wind power generation and construction to the Adama II wind power project, as well as grid access examination standards. It has effectively promoted the transfer of wind power generation capacity in China and will play a vital role in improving the local society and economy. The addition of the Adama II wind power project will further help the Ethiopian government gradually establish a national wind power industry and push forward local economic growth and transformation.

The Adama wind power project is an excellent example, and a classic case, of a China-Ethiopia cooperation in energy construction. It best demonstrates the selfless support of the Chinese government and Chinese people to help Africa develop national resources and facilitate sustained development. This project will benefit a great number of Ethiopian people by consistently distributing power to hundreds and thousands of households, as well as lighting countless bright lamps for Ethiopia.
