Updated: 2015-11-30

The first generation unit of the Nam Ou Cascade Hydropower Project, which is invested and constructed by POWERCHINA, officially began electricity generation on November 29.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, Minister of Energy and Mines Khammany Inthilath, and other government and provincial officials, as well as president of POWERCHINA Sun Hongshui, attended the inaugural ceremony, and pressed the start button for electricity generation.

Addressing the ceremony, Lao Minister of Energy and Mines Khammany Inthilath said the Nam Ou Hydropower Project will play an important role in regulating seasonal drought in the Nam Ou River basin, ensuring downstream irrigation for plantation and reducing soil erosion.

Sun Hongshui, the president of POWERCHINA, said that POWERCHINA will continue to fulfill its corporate social responsibilities, contributing to socio-economic development in Laos, and will take an active role in participation and implementation of The Belt and Road Initiative.
