POWERCHINA Completes the World's Longest Dam

On Jan 1, 2013, the New Year's day, a grand completion ceremony and 57th anniversary of the Sudanese Independence Day was held in Roseires Town of Sudan, to celebrate the completion of Roseires Dam Raising Project, which was undertaken by B7 and B5 of POWERCHINA. Bashire, Sudanese President, and his government’s senior officials, President of Somali, Representatives from the 6 member countries of Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, Luo Xiaoguang,Chinese Ambassador to Sudan, and Ding Zhengguo, Assistant General Manager of CHINAPOWER and General Manager of Overseas Business Department of CHINAPOWER attended the ceremony. Present at the ceremony were also representatives from all circle of life of Sudanese people, local residents, and representatives from the staff of the project, totaling more than 30000 people.

Roseires Dam, firstly built in 1960s for power generation and irrigation purposes, is located on the Blue Nile River, in Damazin City, Blue Nile Province, Sudan,about 550 km to the south of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The objective of this Project is to raise the dam by 10m. The heightened dam, with a length of 25.1km, has become the longest earth and rock fill dam in the world. The Project is the second large-size hydropower project, after Merowe, undertaken by POWERCHINA in Sudan, and shall irrigate the vast farmland within the area of Roseires and Khartoum.
