Sino-French relations reach golden year

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations, the Night of China will be held at the Grand Palace in Paris on the evening of Jan 27. Artists from both countries will present an exciting performance of images, sounds and lights. Lang Lang's piano solo will open the ceremony, which will close with electronic music by French and Chinese DJs. Equestrian performances by French horse trainer Bartabas will pay tribute to the upcoming Lunar New Year of the Horse.

Best philanthropy journalists awarded

China Philanthropy Research Institute of Beijing Normal University held its second Yiren Award ceremony in Beijing on Jan 16, to recognize media companies for their excellent coverage in the field in 2013, including best profile, best photo news, best in-depth report. Ten philanthropy journalists won awards. Each of the journalists also received a prize of 10,000 yuan ($1,650) from funds provided by the Shenzhen One Foundation, an independent public fundraising foundation in China.

Chinese Idol winner signs up with UMG

Li Xiangxiang, the winner of the first season of Chinese Idol, a popular Chinese reality singing competition based on the British television series Pop Idol, has signed with Universal Music Group. He announced that he plans tol record his first album. Li also performed his first single at the event, called Miss Me. The 22-year-old pub singer, from Anhui province, impressed the audience and judges with his singing and dance moves when competing in Chinese Idol last summer.

Quantum information science center opens

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Excellence Quantum Information and Quantum Physics was founded in Hefei, Anhui province, on Jan 15. The center, based in the University of Science and Technology of China and under the leadership of the CAS, will be built into a top-notch academic institution with an international influence in quantum information and quantum physics, Bai Chunli, president of CAS, said at the founding ceremony.
