The 17th Asian Games, which opens in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, on Thursday, is a major sports event for most participants. But for athletes from the two parts of the Korean Peninsula, it will be yet another platform for a new round of political game.
The State Council, China's cabinet, has issued the most complete reform plan for schools and college enrollment and the examination system since the resumption of the college entrance exam (or gaokao) in 1978. The reform is aimed at exploring the correlation between college enrollment and senior middle school education, facilitate quality education, offer more options to and ease the exam burden on students, and promote their all-round development.
Chinese Film director Wang Quan'an has been detained on charges of soliciting sexual services. But he is not the first celebrity to face such charges. Other celebrities, including the actor Huang Haibo and microblogging celebrity Xue Manzi, have been punished for the same offense.

THE GOVERNMENT IS BETTING HEAVILY ON A new round of urbanization to provide the "kinetic energy" that bridges the urban-rural divide, promotes agricultural modernization, raises production capacities and farmers' incomes, stimulates consumption, attracts investment, incubates new industries, unleashes greater domestic demand, defuses the economy's downward pressures, and guarantees its steady and persistent progress.
Urbanization is a major tool of the government to maintain economic stability, and Premier Li Keqiang's speech marks the move to boost confidence as the economy shows hints of decline. The move can also benefit the central and western provinces and regions by better balancing economic development, as well as easing the pressure on population and resources in the eastern coastal regions.
After its initial public offering (IPO) on New York Stock Exchange, Alibaba is expected to become the third-biggest Internet company listed in the United States in terms of market value. Although Alibaba's IPO is expected to fetch between $154 billion to $169 billion and could turn out to be the largest of its kind in US history, many Chinese might be asking a question: Why did Alibaba founder Jack Ma seek to list on the NYSE rather than seeking A-shares on the Chinese mainland?

The 17th Asian Games opens on Sept 19 in Incheon, the Republic of Korea, and has been aptly themed "Diversity Shines Here". Diversity will indeed shine in Incheon but it will shine for unity on the Korean Peninsula, because this is the first time the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will participate in a sports event in the ROK since the 2005 Asian Athletics Championships in Incheon and, more importantly, this is the DPRK's first presence in a major global event since its leader Kim Jong-un assumed office in 2012.
