Hi-tech running track makes its debut

A one-of-a-kind smart running track equipped with high-tech devices such as facial recognition system and heart rate monitors has made its debut at Mingzhuhu Park on Chongming Island in Shanghai.

The 8-kilometer track consists of two types of paths: a 6,800-meter one made of plastic and a 700-m one made of red asphalt. The track also features a wooden pontoon section on the water that measures 500 meters. The track is free to use.

Chen Zhixian, a manager at Chongming Shanghai Tourism Investment Development Co, said that the facial recognition device uses two cameras to calculate a runner's average speed over certain distances. The system is similar to the one used in point-to-point speed cameras on highways.

"The facial recognition technology adopted by these smart tracks in Mingzhuhu Park ensures fair competition among runners as it prevents them from taking shortcuts to gain an advantage over their rivals," he said.

"In addition to the eight facial recognition devices, we have also integrated other new technologies in the smart track, such as an automatic water mist machine to help cool down the runners and heart rate testing devices to monitor the runners' physical conditions. They will be put in use soon," he added.
