Cao belongs to a pioneering group of young Chinese artists, who use video and multi-media installations to look at the rapid changes in Chinese society.

Her most influential works include films like Whose Utopia and La Town.

In 2010, Cao was nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize and was shortlisted for the Hugo Boss Prize.

She received the Best Young Artist Award at the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards in 2006.

For her latest assignment, Cao was picked by the BMW Art Car jury of 12 scholars and museum curators, including Richard Armstrong, director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and Chris Dercon, director of Tate Modern in London.

American artist John Baldessari, who will create the 19th BMW Art Car, was also chosen by the same team.

To prepare for her latest assignment, Cao has talked with the management and design teams of BMW, and visited BMW factories in Munich and Shenyang.

Movies like No Man's Land, Crash and Walking Dead are also part of her research.

Like previous BMW Art Cars, the final work will first take part in a car race before being exhibited in museums around the world.
